Overview

Why Choose a Clear Span Hangar?

Aircraft kept outside take the weather: sunlight on paint and canopies, moisture in avionics and wind on control surfaces. Hangar space at an airfield can be hard to find, expensive or a long way from where the aircraft is flown.

A clear span hangar puts the aircraft under cover on your own hardstanding, with no internal columns to steer a wingtip around. It can be specified for storage alone, or insulated, lit and serviced for maintenance work.

Hire suits a season, a temporary base or the wait for planning on a permanent hangar. Purchase suits a settled operation. Larger aircraft and the widest door openings are designed on the permanent structural steel system, and large hangars for commercial-size aircraft are available to buy only.

Specification

What Makes a Hangar Work

A hangar is sized from the aircraft outwards. These four points set the specification.

01

Span Set by the Wingspan

The clear span has to take the widest aircraft with room to move it in and out and to work around it. Spans reach up to 20 m on the aluminium system and up to 30 m on the galvanised steel system. Wider spans are designed on the structural steel system.

02

The Door Opening

The door is often the dimension that decides the building. Its width and height come from the wingspan, the tail height and the clearance needed to tow the aircraft in safely. Every hangar is bespoke, and the right door changes a great deal with the size of the aircraft, so the door is chosen to suit the aircraft the hangar will house and confirmed with you at design stage.

03

Engineered for an Exposed Site

Airfields are open and often windy. Wind and snow loads are calculated for the location, structural calculations are included with every system, and anchoring is checked against the surface the hangar stands on.

04

Ground, Floor and Fire

Hangars are supplied without a floor, so the existing concrete or hardstanding becomes the hangar floor and must carry the aircraft and any tug or lift. Fuel and maintenance work bring fire considerations, and fire performance options are available across the systems.

Aircraft hangars

Temporary, Semi-Permanent or Permanent Hangars

Each system suits a different length of stay and size of aircraft.

01

Temporary Hangars

An aluminium frame with a PVC or insulated roof, for a season, a temporary base or cover while a permanent hangar is planned. Eaves heights from 3 to 6 m. Available to hire or buy, and it can be dismantled and moved. See temporary buildings.

02

Semi-Permanent Hangars

A galvanised steel frame with steel cladding or insulated sandwich panels, for a flying school, club or maintenance operation that will run for years. Clear spans up to 30 m and eaves heights up to 7 m. See semi-permanent buildings.

03

Permanent Steel-Framed Hangars

A structural steel frame on engineered foundations, with the span, height and doors designed for the aircraft. For a settled base or larger aircraft, and available to buy. See steel-framed buildings.

Send us the approximate dimensions, postcode, intended use and likely duration. We can prepare an initial figure without a site visit.

  • Hire and purchase compared. Both options are priced against the same brief, so you can compare them properly.
  • Built around your specification. The figure reflects the size, insulation, access and intended use of your building.
  • An indicative programme. We include the likely project sequence alongside the initial cost.
  • No obligation. Use the quotation to review the project internally and come back when you are ready.

Aircraft hangars sit within the full range of temporary industrial buildings, alongside clear span buildings and workshop buildings. Compare temporary building hire against temporary buildings for sale.

For maintenance workshops, equipment storage and canopies on the same airfield, see aviation buildings.

Next you will add the project details. Pricing is confirmed against the site and the agreed specification, and any survey date is arranged with you.

Frequently asked questions

What Size of Aircraft Can a Hangar Take?

It depends on the wingspan, length and tail height, plus the clearance needed to move the aircraft in and out. The galvanised steel system spans up to 30 m and suits many light aircraft and helicopters. Larger aircraft are designed on the structural steel system, where the span and doors are bespoke.

Send us the aircraft types you need to house, including any you expect to add, and we will check them against the systems.

Do We Need Permission to Put Up a Hangar on an Airfield?

If the site is on or near an airfield, speak to the aerodrome operator early. A new building near a runway or approach path can affect aerodrome safeguarding, so the operator may need to agree its position and height.

Planning permission is a separate question that depends on the use, the location, the size and how long the hangar will stay. We work with a specialist planning company that covers the UK and can introduce you to discuss your proposal. See planning permission for temporary buildings for general guidance.

Can a Hangar Be Heated for Maintenance Work?

Yes. Insulated roof and wall panels allow the hangar to be heated for people working inside, and ventilation and condensation control can be planned to protect aircraft and equipment.

Electrics, including lighting and power, are available as an upgrade. Heating and ventilation are specified around the work inside and included only where your quotation states them, so tell us what will happen in the hangar.

How Is a Hangar Secured?

The hangar doors and pedestrian doors can be locked, and the building is fully enclosed when the doors are shut. Alarm, CCTV and access control systems are arranged separately, so include them in your plans early if your insurer or airfield requires them.

Can We Hire a Hangar for One Season?

Yes. Hire is available on the aluminium and galvanised steel systems, though large hangars for commercial-size aircraft are available to buy only. Minimum hire periods, notice and end-of-hire arrangements are confirmed for the selected building at quotation, so tell us the dates you need cover for.

Are Noah buildings designed for UK wind and snow loads?

Yes. The selected structure is specified using the applicable project design criteria, including site location, building geometry and relevant wind and snow actions. Site-specific requirements and any operational conditions are confirmed in the structural information and project specification.

Are Noah buildings fire rated?

Fire performance is project-specific rather than a single yes-or-no rating for the whole building range. Different roof and wall systems provide different fire characteristics, and the correct specification depends on the building use, occupancy, stored materials, proximity to boundaries and the project fire strategy or Building Regulations requirements. We can specify appropriate construction options once those requirements are understood.

What warranty comes with a Noah building?

Unless the quotation states otherwise, Noah provides a 12-month defects notification period from handover. Individual components may have separate manufacturer warranties. Warranty cover does not include fair wear and tear, accidental damage, unauthorised alterations, inadequate maintenance, ground movement, blocked drainage, abnormal weather beyond the stated design criteria or use outside the agreed specification. The quotation confirms the cover applicable to the selected system. 10 year frame warranty as standard.

Is a floor included with the building?

Floors are not included with our temporary, semi-permanent or permanent buildings. The surface beneath the building, such as existing concrete or hardcore, forms the floor. Its suitability depends on the intended use, loads and ground conditions; any necessary groundworks need to be arranged separately. Noah can include sports flooring for sports projects, with the scope agreed in the quotation.
